Moab's Newest Singletrack Found at Dead Horse State Park
Building Moab’s newest trail system was a group effort.
The new Intrepid Trail System at Dead Horse Point State Park is the result of a true community effort, said Marian DeLay, executive director of the Moab Area travel Council.
The trail system offers jaw-dropping views of the vast landscape of Canyonlands National Park, the twisting meanders of the Colorado River and thousands of square miles of amazing red rock.
DeLay said the 9-mile trail was built under the Dead Horse Point Management Plan. The effort involved pulling together a variety of groups which were all asked what they would build if they could build whatever they wanted.
Through the discussions it was agreed that since there were no trails that ventured all the way out to the Dead Horse canyon rim, efforts should focus there.
Groups involved in the discussion included Trail Mix, Trail Alliance and the International Mountain Bike Association. DeLay said the committee functioned so well the result is a trail that is “absolutely incredibly beautiful.”
The Intrepid Trail System has three hiking and biking loops with varying degrees of difficulty. Included are slickrock sections, looping singletrack, sand washes and the type of scenery Moab is famous for.
Unlike some of the trails in the Moab area, this one is ridable for all levels of rider. “Most families can do it,” DeLay said. “It’s a really nice family trail.”
DeLay added her opinion on what makes the trail so special. “It’s a multitude of everything. It’s up and down, sandy and hard rock.”
The variety in the trail reflects the diversity of the committee. “The nice thing about the committee,” DeLay said, “is that there were so many different kinds of people. We ran the gamut.” The result of the cooperative effort is a committee effort everybody seems to be happy with.
